WARSZTATY GOŚCI ZAGRANICZNYCH:
1) prof. A. Bifulco, Kingston University
Assessing Emotional Abuse in the childhood of offenders
It is well documented that offenders have more troubled childhood experience than the population at large. This is due in large part to its role in forensic disorders such as conduct disorder and psychopathy, as well as its role in relationship problems including inter-personal violence. However, specificity of type of childhood experience and type of offender disorder is not well established. In order to understand the lifelong problems emerging from troubled childhood experience we need a measure which is robust in its retrospective use and is able to differentiate between different types of childhood adversity and their timing.
The Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA) is a well established UK interview measure of childhood to age 17. It measures a range of experiences shown to relate to a variety of disorders in adult life. Of particular interest is the experience of emotional abuse which is not well defined in practitioner guidance. The workshop will explore definitions of Antipathy (hostile, critical parenting) and Psychological abuse (sadistic and coercive control) as aspects relevant to childhood experience of offenders. Vignettes will be used to illustrate interview scorings and to encourage discussion as to the possible damage inflicted from such parenting in relation to longer term risk and forensic outcomes.
Number of participants: 15-20
2) dr C. Nee, University of Portsmouth
Ways of improving validity when doing research with offenders
In this workshop the author will briefly review research that has helped her develop her various methods when doing research with offenders. The participants will look at what we know are the downfalls to self-reported offending. They will discuss which methods are best when we are trying to understand the offender’s decision-making and behaviour at the scene of the crime. There will be demonstrations and exercises to complete.
Number of participants: 15-20
